As technology shapes the future of education and work, digital literacy has become an essential life skill. eVidyaloka’s EmpowerED program delivers comprehensive digital education to students, especially girls in government residential schools. Through engaging lessons, students explore new digital concepts, build confidence, and gain knowledge that supports their academic and career journeys. Beyond technical knowledge, these skills foster creativity, problem-solving, and empower students to navigate a technology-driven future.
Pritika Boro, a Class 6 student at a KGBV school in Assam, once thought computers were meant only for playing games. That perception changed when her school introduced digital literacy classes, opening her eyes to the broader world of technology. Curious and eager, Pritika looked forward to her first session, excited to explore something that was entirely new.
The volunteer teacher played a key role in shaping her understanding of the digital concepts. He introduced her to the basic components of the computer. She learned to use tools like MS Paint, MS Word, and MS Excel. He also guided her on how to browse the internet safely. By demonstrating each step with clear examples, he made learning engaging and enjoyable.
Class assistant Shikha Baishya supported the online classes by ensuring every student felt involved and confident. She helped students join classes, resolve technical issues, and understand practical concepts with patience and clarity. Through simple explanations, interactive games, and stories, she made each session lively and accessible.
Pritika feels grateful to both the volunteer teacher and the class assistant who have contributed significantly to the confidence she has developed. Today, she comfortably uses a computer to type, draw, create documents, and even assist her classmates. Her journey highlights the transformative power of digital education, turning a computer from a simple device into a gateway to creativity, knowledge, and self-belief.
At another KGBV school, Class 8 student Junaki Begum expanded her computer know-how with guidance from a volunteer teacher. Learning tools such as MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Paint sparked her interest in creating digital content.
As her skills grew, Junaki was introduced to coding, which she found both exciting and insightful. Coding helped her understand how technology works and showed her that she could create solutions of her own, strengthening her logical thinking and creativity.
A proud milestone for her was participating in the Viksit Bharat Buildathon Program. Representing her school and collaborating with other students gave her the opportunity to share ideas, learn from peers, and grow in confidence. Digital literacy classes have opened new opportunities for her, inspiring her to continue exploring technology and coding. She hopes to use these skills to develop meaningful solutions that support her community and contribute to the nation’s progress.
Like Pritika and Junaki, many girls across rural schools now have the opportunity to explore and learn digital skills through the EmpowerED program. These experiences spark curiosity, encourage students to dream bigger, and inspire them to pursue alternative career paths. With access to technology, mentorship, and hands-on learning, students are empowered to become innovators and future leaders in their communities.
