Building Strong Foundations: Transforming Learning

“Teaching has always been a fulfilling experience for me, but my current sessions hold a very special place in my journey as an educator.” For Urvashi Das, a volunteer teacher who teaches grade 6 mathematics at a rural government school in Maharashtra, volunteering is an exciting part of her weekly schedule. “The sessions are not just a routine activity; they are something I genuinely look forward to”, she shares.

Sparking an interest for mathematics can be particularly challenging, but strong foundational knowledge is also essential for grasping advanced concepts. Urvashi recognizes the importance of this, and her thoughtful efforts truly stand out.

She elaborates, “I try to explain concepts in simple, clear examples and then connect them to the present curriculum. By doing this, the students not only understand what is being taught in school but also develop confidence in applying this knowledge to solve problems. I aim to remove the fear associated with mathematics and connect it with logical reasoning, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.”

This methodology has proven successful, as she can see visible improvements in the students’ understanding and confidence. The small but steady progress of her students continues to motivate her to provide the best possible learning experience. “Watching the children connect previous lessons with new concepts gives me immense satisfaction and further encourages me to continue building upon their knowledge base,” she shares.

Learning Together

However, learning is not limited to the students; Urvashi is also learning on this journey. She reflects, “Every interaction with the students teaches me something new—whether it is the importance of simplifying explanations, the value of patience, or the creativity needed to make lessons more engaging. I am constantly learning how to adapt my teaching methods to suit the diverse learning needs of the students. This process is helping me grow not just as a teacher, but also as a learner.”

Collaboration in Action

Urvashi emphasizes the role of the Class Assistant—she adds, “The Class Assistant ensures that students remain attentive, focused, and engaged throughout the lesson. She also helps clarify any doubts the children might have and reinforces the concepts after the session is over. This has made the process much smoother and more effective, as the students receive guidance both during and after the sessions.”

Through her dedication and innovative teaching approach, Urvashi embodies the spirit of eVidyaloka’s mission—to make quality education accessible to every child. Volunteering empowers not only the learners but also the volunteers, giving them a chance to make a meaningful difference. Every class, interaction, and moment of guidance helps build confidence and fosters a lasting love of learning among students.
