In a quiet rural community in rural Andhra Pradesh, where illiteracy still casts its heavy shadow, a group of young changemakers dared to dream differently. Students Amrutha and Manya Sri in grade 7, stepped forward with a bold idea — a solution that could address one most persistent challenges in their community: the lack of language skills and functional literacy.
Their inspiration came from eVidyaloka’s: National Student Innovation Challenge (NSIC), a platform inviting students to imagine and design real-world solutions for the communities around them. For these students, the challenge was not abstract. It lived in their everyday observations. They noticed how many elders in their own village struggled to read the most basic signboards, and how children, too, were slipping away from proper language skills as local slang dominated conversations. Instead of treating this as an inevitable reality, they asked a powerful “what if” — What if everyone, regardless of age, had a simple tool to learn and practice languages?
Guided by their NSIC mentor, Mr Varaprasad, The answer took shape in the form of AMMA SLATE — a bilingual learning tool, designed using simple, accessible materials like cardboard and chart paper. One side of the slate teaches Telugu and English, while the other introduces Hindi.
Its simplicity is its strength. With AMMA SLATE, learners can:
From young children first picking up words, to senior citizens eager to break barriers of functional illiteracy, the slate meets every learner where they are.
But AMMA SLATE is not just about alphabets and vocabulary. It is a bridge between generations — encouraging grandparents to learn alongside grandchildren, reducing hesitation, and restoring a sense of dignity to language learning.
The team chose to name it “Amma” not only to evoke warmth and affection but also to honor that first guiding teacher in every life: Mother. Just as every journey of learning begins with Amma, so does this slate — nurturing confidence, resilience, and joy in learners.
What makes AMMA SLATE extraordinary is its accessibility and scalability. It’s low-cost, user-friendly, and replicable in any village or town. Yet, its true impact lies in its spirit — proving that literacy truly has no age limit.
The idea was presented at a national forum, as this team presented the AMMA slate in NSIC finale in Bengaluru and became one of winning team of NSIC Season 8. An idea that began as a classroom thought is lighting up lives in the community. What started as a piece of cardboard has become a movement of creativity, compassion, and collaboration. And it carries a powerful reminder for all of us: Sometimes, the simplest tools hold the greatest power to change the world. We believe stories like AMMA SLATE reflect the limitless creativity of young minds when given the right encouragement. This student-led initiative is not only solving for literacy but also inspiring leadership and empathy — foundations that can uplift entire communities.
