At UPG HS Rajbandh in Jharkhand, a powerful story of resilience and transformation is unfolding — led not by grand funding or sweeping reforms, but by the determination of a few committed individuals who dared to dream of a better future.
Vikash Kumar Gupta, who joined the school as a Class Assistant three years ago, vividly remembers the challenges they faced. Classroom shortages were severe. Students from different grades were packed into the middle school building, struggling to find space. Online learning and digital education initiatives seemed almost impossible due to the limited infrastructure.
But sometimes, change starts with seeing opportunity where others see only obstacles.
A kilometer away from the overcrowded classrooms stood an abandoned high school building — forgotten, unused, and neglected. Determined to bring change, Vikash, alongside dedicated teacher Vijay Kumar Sah and students from grades 5 to 8, took it upon themselves to clean, repair, and revive the deserted building.
Step by step, they breathed new life into the forgotten space. They began conducting classes there, and soon, students from other grades followed. Witnessing this wave of enthusiasm and ownership, the teachers, too, rallied their efforts and moved academic activities into the rejuvenated high school.
This collective action marked a turning point.
Attendance began to rise. Learning conditions vastly improved and for the first time, the school could fully embrace digital and smart classrooms, opening new doors for students to engage with technology and innovation.
This transformation was not driven by external forces alone — it was powered by the willpower of the Headmaster, teachers, students, and community members who believed that their school deserved a second chance.
A heartfelt thanks goes to eVidyaloka and Lok Kalyan Seva Kendra, whose consistent support played a critical role in enabling this digital revolution and making smarter learning accessible to rural children.
Today, as Vikash walks through the bustling corridors of the once-abandoned high school, he is reminded that true change begins with a single determined step — and the courage to keep moving forward.
