Empowering Young Innovators: The Journey of P. Kishore and V. Dinesh

eVidyaloka|April 2025

In the heart of Tamil Nadu’s rural landscape lies PUMS Nambedu, a government school committed to nurturing young talents and future leaders. Among its bright stars are two seventh-grade students, P. Kishore and V. Dinesh, whose passion for technology has set them on an extraordinary journey.

Despite their humble backgrounds — with parents working in agriculture and having education levels below the 10th grade — Kishore and Dinesh have been driven by a dream to learn, explore, and innovate. Their journey into the world of technology began with online Artificial Intelligence classes, part of the BRAIN initiative of eVidyaloka implemented in collaboration with Microsoft.

When the BRAINIAC (Build Rural Artificial Intelligence Network In-Action Challenge) — eVidyaloka’s flagship AI contest — was announced, encouraging students to find AI-driven solutions for real-world community challenges, Kishore and Dinesh saw an opportunity to put their learning into action.During brainstorming sessions, they explored sensors, metal detectors, GPS trackers, and a variety of AI tools such as voice and emotional recognition technologies.

Their hard work and imagination led to the idea of the "AI Smart Safety Watch" affectionately named the Safelet. This wearable device was conceptualized with safety and security in mind. The idea included features like a built-in alarm to alert family, friends, and police in times of danger, GPS tracking for real-time location updates, and an emotional sensor designed to trigger emergency alerts even if the wearer couldn’t do so manually. The Safelet also included a flashlight and an invisible electric shock mechanism for personal protection.

With their project, Kishore and Dinesh advanced through multiple phases of the competition, ultimately reaching Phase 3. Though they did not make it to the finals, their innovation, understanding of AI tools, and their spirit of resilience left a lasting impression. They emerged as true champions within their school and their community.

Beyond their Innovation journey, the boys experienced personal growth as well. Under the guidance and motivation of their dedicated Volunteer Teacher, Sumalatha Vijaymilton, Kishore and Dinesh conquered their fear of public speaking, confidently presenting their project and sharing their ideas with enthusiasm.

Their journey not only showcased creativity and conceptual thinking but also embodied the true spirit of the competition, spreading awareness about AI and its transformative potential among young minds.

Today, Kishore and Dinesh stand as shining examples of how education, opportunity, and mentorship can empower the next generation to imagine, innovate, and lead change, regardless of where they come from.
