Gayathri Sankaran, a volunteer teacher teaching English to 7th-grade students at GHS K Chettikulam, has been making a transformative impact in her virtual classroom. Her passion for teaching and her students' growing enthusiasm for learning have created a dynamic and engaging environment, proving that one can teach rural India online from the comfort of their home.
When Gayathri first began, her students were reserved and hesitant. But as they grew more comfortable with her teaching style, they started to open up, participating actively and confidently answering questions. Reflecting on this journey, Gayathri shares, "Working with the kids has been a wonderful experience. They have been passionate, interested, and active in their learning. As I asked questions, they slowly started opening up and participating more. Seeing them engage in class made me realize that my knowledge was truly reaching them."
One of the key lessons Gayathri emphasizes is the importance of making mistakes as part of the learning process. She encourages her students to shed their shyness and gain the confidence to be bold, a life skill that will serve them well in the future. "I always tell the kids to make mistakes when speaking and learning. This way, their shyness goes away, and they gain the confidence to be bold. This will help them speak confidently in tomorrow's world," she explains.
For Gayathri, teaching is about more than just sharing knowledge. It’s about bringing out the best in her students by fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment. She believes that both teachers and students grow together when this type of relationship is nurtured.
Gayathri believes that teaching is a collaborative learning process, and as educators, it's essential to bring out the best in every child. As educators every teacher hones the responsibility of bringing the best in your students. Our experience shows they are so many ways to inspire action and motivation. For Gayathri, creating the environment to make mistakes without the fear of being judged transformed her classroom.
If you're inspired by Gayathri’s story and looking for a way to give back, you too can teach rural India online and create an impact from the comfort of your home. Passionate volunteers like Gayathri are changing lives, one lesson at a time.
